Overview

The influence of Nordic culture on Sicily during the 11th and 12th centuries gave rise to a remarkable new architectural style: Palermo’s Arab-Norman architecture. This style blended Northern European innovations—such as strong vertical lines and towers flanking façades—with Byzantine designs like the Greek-cross plan enclosed in a square, and Islamic-inspired details including pointed arches and intricate geometric inlays.

Our tour will take you through three of Palermo’s most iconic Arab-Norman monuments.

We’ll begin at the Palazzo dei Normanni (Norman Palace) and the stunning Cappella Palatina, once the private chapel of King Roger II Hauteville and his court.

Next, we’ll visit the Cathedral of Palermo, originally Europe’s largest mosque, and trace its fascinating transformation into the city’s most celebrated landmark.

Finally, we’ll explore the Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio (La Martorana), whose layers of modifications over the centuries reflect the diverse civilizations that shaped Palermo.
